• Here are some things you might like to know about life coaching

What does a coach do?

A coach helps establish a dynamic creative space for the client to explore new pathways and possibilities. This involves asking powerful questions, paying close attention to the client and the details of what they’re saying, noticing patterns and nonverbal cues, and engaging deeply with the client to help them discover guidance within themselves.

How can I tell that I need a coach?

Many people can benefit from coaching! Those who get the most out of the process are often people who have:

  • a sensation of wanting change but have no idea what it is or how to get started

  • experienced a life transition and are not quite sure what comes next, how to regain confidence, or how to move forward

  • decided to start or change careers, but are not yet sure what they want to do or how to get going

  • noticed themselves caught in unhelpful habits, disorganization, or chaotic life patterns, and want to make lasting change

  • found themselves repeating the same challenges in life choices or relationships and would like a hand off the merry-go-round

  • engaged in some healing work with a counselor or therapist and are still seeking support in creating and maintaining changes in their life

  • … and so much more!

How long does a coaching engagement last?

It depends on the number and scope of changes you are trying to make. Coaching tends to be shorter-term than counseling, and typical engagements last 3 to 6 months. After your initial consultation, your coach can help you determine an appropriate timeframe based on the goals and issues you discuss.

Do I need coaching, counseling, or both?

It depends! A good place to start is determining if you mostly need help healing or making change. A certain amount of each is possible with either coaching or counseling, but only a counselor is trained to help you recover from adverse experiences or trauma, cope with chronic stress, depression and anxiety, or work through other profound internal issues.

Life Coaches are valuable resources for creating change and achieving goals that have proved difficult to gain on your own. Don’t worry if you’re still not sure who can help you best — schedule a free initial consultation, and we can help you figure it out.

What does a session look like?

A coaching engagement is based around the goals you set for yourself. Each session within that engagement will focus on discrete aspects of those goals, or on other areas of life you would like to refresh or transform.

Your coach will ask you questions around your issue, help design plans of action, and help you notice and overcome both the internal and external obstacles that block your path from time to time. Come to your sessions willing to dive deep, play with new ideas, and engage with different perspectives to help you find clarity.

What are your fees? Can I use my insurance?

Vivian’s current fee is $87 for a 50-minute session, but pricing can vary based on the payment plan you choose. If your financial situation requires something more particular, please discuss this with her during your intro session so you can come up with a plan together.

Because the field of coaching is not yet regulated by a governing body, it cannot be billed to insurance. You can check with your benefits provider if your HSA or FSA account can be used to cover your sessions.

We can address any questions you have about this in our initial consultation.

How do I get the most out of my sessions?

Do your homework, engage, be open, and think & feel deeply. A coach, like any other wellness professional, cannot unlock the answers to yourself for you. It’s your life — lasting change will be easiest to create with your wholehearted participation and willingness to work on your own behalf.

For our part, your coach will help by celebrating your work, holding you accountable to your values and dreams, and guiding you through the rich world of your possibilities.
